WandaVision

WandaVision ★★★½

There were moments - and episodes, were WandaVision (2021) was one of the greatest things Marvel has made, but those moments were minimal, and fleeting, in the end. I watched the entire mini-series with her, and it was really awesome. She gives WandaVision (2021) a 7.5 rating or, if you prefer, a 3.75/5 rating. I love her more than Jimmy Woo loves magic.

Throughout this entire mini-series, people were praising how original and confusing the story of WandaVision (2021) was. I was not among those people. I thought for the most part, WandaVision (2021) was original, but I didn’t think it was mind-blowing at all. It definitely challenged an audience more than a superhero film, or series, has in the past, but in the end I thought the series was really hollow. I see the entire series as a film. There are ups and downs, some episodes being really, really good, and some episodes being not the best. Even though the entire series was only 9 episodes, I felt like it needed to be longer. Some episodes felt completely pointless, only leading to one event that would be abruptly cut off as an episodic cliffhanger. I feel like the first few episodes were some of the strongest, simply because they were complete and engrossing. Once these episodes were over, and the episodes stopped being “episodes”, it felt really basic. All of the style disappeared once it stopped being a “sitcom”. It felt really, really generic and was quite boring (leading to a pretty disappointing finale). All of the originality WandaVision (2021) established from the first few episodes disappeared by the finale. I think the writing also took a dip by this point. Every time we were with the S.W.O.R.D. agents, it was extremely unoriginal. Luckily characters like Darcy Lewis, Jimmy Woo, and Monica Rambeau helped in making those sequences tolerable, in the end those sequences were the worst parts of the film. In the end, I think there was a lot of wasted potential in this series. It could’ve locked down on Wanda and Vision’s relationship in a more grounded character study, but instead they reverted back to CGI superhero fights and generic bad guys. I still enjoyed watching WandaVision (2021), I just wish it went places Marvel hadn’t gone before like the first few episodes.

P.S. I wasn’t disappointed by the fan theories that didn’t come true, I was mainly disappointed with how rushed the series concluded and how Marvel took a beloved character and teased the heck out of them only to have a moment where they made fun of their fans. It felt a lot like the Mandarin reveal in Iron Man 3 (2013).
