Anna Karenina ★★★★½

An opulent, elaborate version of the oft-adapted novel that is set primarily in and around a mock stage in an effort to approximate the feeling of being on display in Imperial Russian society. It's a bold conceit (some might say pretentious) that pulls from a variety of mediums to produce a thoroughly unique entry in the crowded field of costume dramas. While this occasionally smacks of excess and frequently favors style over substance the overall experience is so inherently cinematic it forgives most of its flaws.
