Carol ★★★★

Such a gentle and tender film. I adored the way this was shot. There was something magical about every frame. The soft light on the side of Theresa's face as she snaps a photograph of Carol. The art direction alone was stunning. The costumes and make-up and gorgeous set design - it takes something special for this to truly stand out. I got swept up in the romance of it all, but I'm not blind to the fact there are some issues here - specifically the manipulative nature of the central relationship. I wanted to give this a higher rating because I did love it, but there are plenty of other films that are portraying LGBT relationships in more meaningful and intersting ways. Still, a charming and well-crafted film that I'd be happy to watch again.
