_Kubrick’s review published on Letterboxd:
Essentially the child of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy - which I has seen multiple reviews mention. But the film wears these influences on its sleeve, casting De Niro as a comedian talk show host and including the iconic finger-gun to the head action seen from TD. It's impossible to ignore the parallels if you've seen those, admittedly, stronger films, but the merging of these stories with Batman lore makes for a unique comic book film.
So the film isn't super original, but man, Joaquin Phoenix carries this film like no other. He gives a towering performance that just makes this film work. He lends legitimacy to the whole thing.
Overall I thought it was a "serious" comic book film done as well as it could be. Probably the best of its kind since the Dark Knight.
