A Sun is one of the best drama films I have ever seen. Solely based on how the film focuses on characters that continue to live in bad luck and misery. All of the devastating things in this film aren't treated as devastatingly as they really are, but instead is filtered through by soft music creating a sense of calm. If this was done by any other screenwriter they would have had characters break down, but instead this was written a lot more interestingly with characters who keep themselves together and carry on even while constantly losing and not getting much back from life.
This would have been such a good film just as a gothic thriller instead of also being an opera. The comic book scenes should definitely be removed as it was just lazy storytelling. Conceptually and aesthetically this film was cool though. If you like the look of cheap early 2000s rock music videos like I do that is.
George Lucas is a yoyo filmmaker who can dip between being good and shit. I'm also pretty sure E.T. sound bites were being used on the Ewoks occasionally which I thought was cool.
Here's a list of what was bad:
- Low effort Star Wars theming
- Continuity errors
- Poor storyline
- Characters that state the obvious/dumb dialogue
What I did like though was the music, the character Mace (I thought the boy playing him acted surprisingly decent too) and the matte paintings.
