I will not deny that there are some great evocative images in here. But I'm sorry Tarkovsky fans as ultimatly the vast majority of his film failed to grab me. To be fair I did have to watch this with subtitles and a transfer that weren't great so I would be willing to give it another shot if it ever gets a quality re-release here in th States or if I ever learn Russian.

Very cute, fun, and occasionally funny. Love the production design but would've liked it more if it was a bit faster paced.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part II: Eternal

    ★★★★½

Pretty much episodes 9-12 of the tv series but with enhanced visuals, sound, and music. This time no real important scenes were cut out and the pacing isn't as weird as it was in the first compilation film (also helped by the fact this is 20 min shorter). Basically just as great as the original and actually works quite well as a movie. Might choose to watch this instead of the last four episodes next tine I rewatch Madoka.

MJ's character is kind of weird, but otherwise love the goofiness and cheese.

Slows down a bit too much in the second act, but otherwise a very nice comfy movie for white boys.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Could've gone without the 10 minute musical sequence, but otherwise pretty fun.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part I: Beginnings

    ★★★½

Wouldn't recommend watching for first time viewers of madoka magica as some important scenes are cut out and pacing is a little weird with it turning 8 episodes into one two-hour film. The added visual flair is nice, but not really enough to make this film really worth checking out unless you've already seen the series want to watch a slightly condensed version of the story. As that it is fairly serviceable...but nothing more. Still an enjoyable watch but that's just cause the original tv series was great already.

I can appreciate what it is trying to do, but in reality this film feels painfully aimless and self-important. Wish McKay would have made either a a full-on documentary/essay film on Cheney's career or come up with an actually compelling narrative instead of this weird middle ground. Shame that so much great acting had to go to waste.

Really appreciate how daring and experimental this film often is. Some parts are just a bit too much of a hipster nightmare for me to really like it that much.
