welcom to my death chamber, interloper
god i really loved this. totally willing to overlook this movie’s flaws because there really is nothing like it. reminds me so much of evil dead 2, the way that this very obvious charm and love for unhinged dumb fun chaos just oozes off of every setpiece. dont even want to discuss how cool that twist is just because its an experience to witness blind.
on a technical level i can acknowledge that this is basically a masterpiece but it just does not mesh well with the (flawless) original
like, i fucking hate the marine angle. yeah they look cool, yeah their dialogue is fun, yeah its sick to watch them get eaten in spite of their hubris but every scene of them mowing down like hundreds of stupid zombie bugs really lessens the first film’s straight up superb depiction of the Xenomorph as this unrelenting brutal perfect specimen.
that being said, fucking fantastic screenplay
can only describe this film’s visual language as like a subdued midwestern Giallo. overcast skies, bright blue shafts of moonlight.. seeing this restored in a fully packed theater has probably been one of my favorite movie experiences in a long, long time.
just want to gush about one scene in particular: this slow, tiny little dimmer light that plays off the stark white of Michael’s mask as he emerges from the shadows behind Laurie…god daaaaaaaaaaammmmnnnn
