The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera ★★★½

Hooptober 666: 18/31
1920s, films before 1966, Lon Chaney, classic universal

My first time seeing any version of The Phantom of the Opera (and actually any Universal Classic too, geesh! More to follow soon). I had a passing familiarity with the story, or so I thought. I expected the phantom to be a more romantic and sympathetic character, but no, he's just a villainous creep. Played wonderfully by the masterful Lon Chaney, I might add.

Beautiful set designs, costumes, and makeup make this silent film a pleasure to behold. The masquerade ball sequence is transcendental.
