  • National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

    National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

    ★★½

I am unable to get my mind into 80's comedy mode. Our modes of comedy have changed so much since then. To anyone raised in or who participated in internet culture from 2012-19, this movie is the cheesiest and stalest shtick. Where is the cynicism. Where is the painostolgia. Where is the bitter verbal irony. Where is the cringe. Too pure, too uncritically wholesome. Why doesn't the dad die in the final shot? I am afraid I am too irony poisoned to appreciate National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

  • Gargantuan

    ★★½

    beautiful

  • The Beach Bum

    The Beach Bum

    ★★½

Harmony Korine pushes irony over the edge into something oddly sincere. “Meta-modern.” The bum is so bummy he doesn’t care about anything, and I mean absolutely anything, at all, my goodness. In late stage capitalism we are all The Beach Bum or whatever

    Nothing special to see here

  • The Shower

    The Shower

    ★★½

    its okay

  • Yours Faithfully, Edna Welthorpe (Mrs)

    Yours Faithfully, Edna Welthorpe (Mrs)

    ★★½

Wow this ugly unfunny short was kind of relaxing

  • Under the Silver Lake

    Under the Silver Lake

    ★★½

Inconsistent in: tone, narrative, themes, plot, characterization, structure, pace, genre, form. Very easy to hate this 139 minute Scooby Doo movie.

  • Late Night

    Late Night

    ★★½

Made me laugh one time!!! Please someone tell me there are better movies about workplace diversity than this!!!

  • Donovan Reid

    Donovan Reid

    ★★½

Gets better as it goes on, blossoming into an actually good movie by the conclusion. I thought I had predicted the ending, but it was more complicated than I thought. For an obviously extremely low-budget movie with a full non-actor cast, this was engaging and meaningful. But brace yourself for some terrible, terrible acting, from everyone but the lead. Mixed overall but charming and memorable.

  • Guava Island

    Guava Island

    ★★½

Why this was made, I do not know. Some occasional style points but a poorly written script and plot. Strong labor union energy!

  • Lowland Kids

    Lowland Kids

    ★★½

    Chicago Critics Film Festival 2019

Overlong and unfocused. Important subject matter but with a topic so political (state-resettling of climate refugees, who are refugees because of oil company practices) the human slice-of-life was ineffective. I really did like the people though!

  • Yesterday

    Yesterday

    ★★½

    Chicago Critics Film Festival 2019

Yesterday world-builds a creative premise into a broadly successful narrative until the final 20 minutes of the film which are the most hokey ridiculous cheesy final 20 minutes of a film I may have ever seen. The ending really, really sours the great thematic and plot developments achieved in the beginning and especially the middle of the film. There is also one very unsatisfying plot resolution that the script writer (the guy from Love Actually.................) decided to cash-in on as a joke. The passing but not noteworthy acting and the script decisions really sank Yesterday.

  • Sweet Steel

    Sweet Steel

    ★★½

    Chicago Critics Film Festival 2019

Too short. Why did he put chocolate on the gun? So the gun would taste better in his final moment? I just remembering being like 🤔 there has to be more? My friend committing suicide three weeks ago did not help my attitude while seeing Sweet Steel. Maybe in time I'll come back and rewatch but for now this empathetic little short didn't work for me.
