Jerry, Dean and Hal Walker reunite for another service comedy but to far better results—mostly because this time Jerry is not sidelined. 108 minutes is too long for an episodic film like this but it is supercharged by Jerry's virtuosic performance, with the boxing scene being the apex I've seen thus far; Dean, although playing the straight man, really gives his scenes with Jerry, and the film as a whole, endearingly friendly vibes. The "That Old Calliope" number is also terrific.

(It's crazy to think that an estimated 80 million people watched this in its release.)

An instinctual defence of instinctual decision-making from one of the great instinctual artists. In that way, this film (especially the hearing scene) can be read as a full-hearted plea for the Late Eastwood style.

Equally absurd and diabolical. Although I do not possess an in-depth knowledge of Germany in the early 20's, this film serves as a fascinating document of the time and place it was made in, where 'a state within a state' is beginning to fester through psychological control and manipulation until, as this film prophetically predicts, it erupts in violence, with its machinery cosmically entrapping even its own creator.
