Upgrade

Upgrade ★★★

A little bit tonally imbalnced, in that I felt it should have gone more in one direction or the other: more dark, gritty, and nihilistic like an Ex Machina; or more campy, silly, schlocky like an Evil Dead 2 or The Matrix. Where it stands, somewhere in the middle, is less interesting, and it becomes more interesting in its best parts, which are embracing one side or the other of that spectrum. That being said, there's a lot of schlocky fun to be had here. If you like movies like the '80s Robocop or the 2010's Dredd that are both campy and dark, then you'll enjoy Upgrade, as I did. The fight scenes are fantastic and uniquely filmed, and the science fiction stuff is mildly interesting.
