Dear Darren Arnofosky,
You can't have meaningful subtext without it being imbedded in the text. Backwards engineering ends up making the "symbols" naive, simplistic and overly preachy, it also gives some illusions of grandeur that you'd be better off without. Stylistic visuals, bombastic scores and overacting can't cover it up either.

The idea of a slasher villain that hunts down his victims in their dreams opened up a lot of possibilities and it delivered ! The film probably one of the few films I've seen so far that blends surrealism with reality/horrific imagery (the other two are Eyes Wide Shut & Eraserhead) and Wes Craven handles that - and builds suspense - wonderfully with memorable imagery that also enhances some…
