Sorcerer ★★★★

A really good film from William Friedkin, and probably a near masterpiece. Whereas the philosophical bleakness of Henri-Georges Clouzot's WAGES OF FEAR is crafted into the film's artistry and mastery of genre (as nail-bitingly suspenseful as any film ever made), Friedkin makes it even more apparent with a setup and cast of characters worthy of the best film noir. No telling how good it might have been, however, had his original choice for casting, including Steve McQueen and Marcello Mastroianni accepted.
