Jacob’s review published on Letterboxd:
The script, co-written by Steve Coogan, keeps the saccharine level down, a trap all too easy for these kind of "human interest" stories, but fails to really develop its characters so Philomena is left in the middle ground. It is an emotive story with far reaching moral and cultural implications, enjoyably told but without enough depth to really elicit the response I wanted to have. After the resultant news stories about babies in church care in Ireland I expected this to have more fibre and drama.
Steve Coogan and Judi Dench make a nice pairing though and that buffet breakfast scene in Washington is quite heartbreaking.
