Carol deserves better.
She deserves an origin story that takes its time; a sequel, maybe even a third film, to allow us to watch her grow; to overcome adversity, and have us bask in her unfathomable power.
Sadly, there’s no time for that; a fancily named war is going on, and Captain Marvel merely serves as an appetizer to the main course that is Endgame.
It’s too safe, too textbook.
Very rarely do we see directors break the mold of the Marvel formula - à la Gunn’s Guardians or Taika’s Ragnarok - and it’s attempted and failed here.
For what it’s worth: Brie is fantastic, and Sam gives us the best Nick Fury to date. Quietly wishing Ms. Larson was in the director’s chair for this one.
