On my first watch, I gave Dunkirk three and a half stars.
I cried that while it was a technical masterpiece, it was bogged down by its thin characters. People tried telling me that it wasn't supposed to be a character study anyway, which I rejected. That's not a good enough argument, I snarled back. Flare shouldn't outweigh character development.
The very thing people were telling me about Dunkirk was my exact defence for Mad Max: Fury Road just two years ago. Yet I rejected it for Dunkirk... and gave Mad Max a pass?! The hypocrisy! When I had come to that realization, I knew I needed to rewatch it with a new pair of eyes.
Expectations can be a bitch, and watching Dunkirk again without them made it so much better.
