The Double Life of Véronique

The Double Life of Véronique ★★★½

The Double Life of Veronique was a really good film that nevertheless ended up a little disappointing. It would have been nicer to see more of the story, to learn how Veronique had affected Weronika's life in the past and vice versa, and though I didn't need a concrete explanation for their connection, I would have liked at least some explanation for it. Irène Jacob was sublime in her dual role and Elżbieta Towarnicka has an angelic singing voice, accompanied by the operatic score and some nice camerawork, though the green and gold could have been toned down a little. I'm not sure what to make of some aspects of the film though and in particular, the inclusion of the perjury subplot baffled me. Apparently it was initially going to play a larger role but in the end it was only mentioned in a couple of scenes so why keep it at all?
