My God, is it possible for another movie to make me FEEL something besides Past Lives this year? I'm losing hope.
When the credits started rolling I had mixed feelings. Not because I doubted how much I liked the film, but because it hit close to home. The fact that I saw myself in the characters elevated the experience to another level and I haven't watched something that made me feel this way in a while. It showed that contentment has a lot of facets and even though we can make it happen for someone else, the only one that'll keep us alive is our inner happiness.
This is hard to rate because on one hand it's got some really cool ideas, an intent to satirize the media and toxic masculinity and a memorable, Twilight Zone/Black Mirror style ending. But on the other hand, it could've used some subtlety. Dialogue is on the nose, characters are insufferable, even if that was the intention. So if you can get past those faults and the kind of lame first act, you're in for real surprise if you're a horror/Sci-Fi fan.
