Not without some caveats, but I finally enjoyed a DC movie! I’m not head over heels because I feel like a lot of inherent storytelling problems with DCEU movies still fester their way into the film, but this movie has one absolutely vital thing that the others don’t: a soul. Actually two: really fucking great peformances. As a franchise course correction kind of film, I’d say this is more of a Bumblebee than something like Guardians of the Galaxy— but that isn’t a bad thing.

I don’t want to wonder my whole life.

A specifically millennial piece of magical realism set out to provide a warm hug to all those who feel lost in life. I really connected to this one and its messages read true to experiences, even my mental state these past two years of my life. my lb username is literally alexgarland so yes obviously I do love this movie and there’s no need for my recommendation but this time around it was a rewatch for my gender & sexuality in film/lit class aided by some supplemental readings including A Cyborg Manifesto by Donna Haraway, a marxist-feminist analysis of technology, bodies and gender performativity, and futurism a.k.a. the most kickass thing I've ever read? I haven't written anything formal on this movie but this is my 5th…

[hideo kojima’s mads mikkelsen voice] lots of good jullianne moores in this movie. divorced jullianne, smoking jullianne, paintball jullianne, clubbing julianne, feeding a cat jullianne, revenge julianne, lip syncing jullianne. kinda wish there was a little more to this but its really hard not to like a slice of life movie about being lost in that very own life, I’m a still a sucker for it!

It’s been a while since I’ve written a full review and I’m so happy I’m easing back in to unpack a really brave and interesting film!

Genre filmmaking to me is at its best when it tackles the abstractions of our reality, and Us certainly does that and more. Peele not only made a well designed and entertaining horror flick, but one that is rich with subtext to do multiple readings on. But at the forefront, this movie is brave…
