this is kind of sick. visuals are absolutely a precursor to Speed Racer and, imo, has both more realistic racing and better melodrama than Days of Thunder.

so glad De Sica stopped doing whatever crap he was in the 60s and got the juice back for a couple years before he died. and really what this has going for it even more than some of his great final films is that he ditched Adriana Novelli who’s editing (it pains me to say bc of how much i otherwise love Finzi-Continis) really lacks the rhythm the shots inherently possess, and Franco Arcalli really just suits his style more
