This was just a really poor imitation of A Monster Calls.
I’m reminded of Margaret Atwood who said American Literature’s most prevalent leitmotif is “money as a sign of divine grace or providence“. Chloe Zhao plays with this using the tragic and romantic lens of the 21st century. The result is a loving tribute to the people who look for a different type of grace, and find it, in America’s mythological landscape.
And Frances McDormand‘s face is a tremendous gift to this world.
