AFI Fest 2018: Movie #19
“What will be will be.”
There are so many cuts to black in this movie that I feel like there should’ve been “Scene Missing” title cards. Practically every shot is gorgeously composed and lighted, though even if it wasn’t quite as captivating, Cold War moved too fast for me to ever get bored. The performances are wonderful, but I never had the chance to really get to know the characters. They fall in love in what feels like a matter of seconds. It’s a film that spans over so many years that we never truly get a chance to live in the moment.
I’m wondering if the political evolution reads better for audiences more familiar with the culture. I was never confused, but I wasn’t sure what it added to the film beyond a temporary source of conflict.
