It feels longer than it is, likely from the weight of the subject. The soundtrack is maudlin and distracts from being too much. Overall, a well made and fairly interesting view of the Bowery.
I enjoyed this a lot, but I like slow, wordless movies where you have to watch the close up shots of characters. A tale as old as time of a love triangle between a poor girl, a rich girl, and a boy trying to rise above his station.
Enjoyed the haunting atmospherics, the visuals, everything all around.
This movie really wants to be Important with a capital I, however; it's really hard to capture lightning in a bottle once let alone twice for director Tony Kaye. The camerawork is jarring, the characters are caricatures, and the plot lacks focus.
That said, I think certain moments of this film are good and touch a vein, such as the parent's night of no shows and Meredith's story. The performance of the leads are good, particularly Brody and Liu.
