Old ★★★

It can all be summed up as good ideas held back by poor writing. The premise is interesting and it gets pretty grim for a PG-13, but I could hardly ever get over dialogue. Surprisingly, given the material they have the acting is solid across the board, with McKenzie, Wolff and Krieps all standing out well in different ways. Alex Wolff in particular seems uniquely suited to pulling off Full M. Night™. This is strongest in the technical department, Shyamalan's vision and the people executing it make for a visually engaging movie, blocking and camerawork especially. Shyamalan, even with all his foibles, has never had trouble with the visual side of his work.

The twist: I like it and hate it just about equally, which also conveniently describes the whole movie
