Before Midnight

Before Midnight ★★★★½

By far the hardest of the three to watch– and probably stronger for it. Watching the whole trilogy in 2 months is a bit of a shock to the system. I don't think I had enough time to grow into Midnight's realizations on life's difficulties from Sunrise and Sunset's naive romanticism. Jesse and Celine come to painful conclusions, all stemming from the inescapable fact that none of us can completely penetrate the barrier between two people and become one. The second half of the film's trip downwards into harsh truth only makes that pendulum back up more wrenching. Life is playing along with the story, using whatever means of communication you can to shave inches off the void between people. gotta pretend there's a time machine.
