Suspiria is beautifully shot, has an arty, dreamlike script and is superbly acted by its (pretty much) all female cast. Tilda Swinton seems made for the enigmatic Mme Blanc and Dakota Johnson as Susie is a model of youth, naiveity and raw energy. The colour palette throughout is a kind of dirty, clay brown which, together with the damp, cold weather, gives the setting a claustrophobic, drab feel (See also the, pretty awful, 1977 fashions).
This is contrasted breathtakingly with the dancing which takes place in the theatre. And the splutters of intense violence seeming (literally at one point) to mirror the visceral dancing from the stellar cast.
This film was intense from the offset and kept me on the edge of my seat. The tension did not hinder my enjoyment however and I loved getting carried from one luscious set piece to the next. The film's bloody climax was uncompromising and startling satisfying.
The score from Thom Yorke was perhaps a bit clichéd at some points (cue plinky, plonky piano) but 2 memorable songs included added to its ethereal quality.
Not for the faint of heart but proper, serious, creepy horror the way it should be!
