Andre Nicolai’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is probably one of the most unique MCU films I’ve seen in a while. Not only will this be inspirational to little girls all over the world, but it will be one of the most powerful. Seriously, Carol Danvers kicks so much ass.
Brie Larson is a powerhouse. She is one of my favorite female actors of all time and CAPTAIN MARVEL is just icing on that cake. She is killer here, from amazing emotional performances to being a strong and powerful female figure. You can definitely tell that she is shaped for this role, she was meant for this character and I love it. Larson being cast as Carol Danvers was an excellent choice and I can’t help but be ecstatic for her.
One of the best things about this film is probably Sam Jackson. I was not expecting to come out of this film wanting to see more of Nick Fury. Jackson absolutely rules some of the scenes and I love it becuase Nick Fury has always been that character I wanted them to dive deeper into. Here, we get a young Nick Fury and it’s quite enjoyable and fun. Larson and Jackson are quite an incredible duo and I want to see more of them in the future, hopefully. Also, making Sam Jackson look young was incredible, it is truly impressive and I didn’t even notice the CG done to him.
Ben Mendelsohn is the other damn amazing performance here. Talos not only has an interesting backstory, but he is possibly one of the best villains ever introduced into the MCU. Mendelsohn brings some serious tones and emotions to Talos and he makes it something memorable and special. This was definitely well done and I want more of him in this universe.
The film is very well written, when I said that this film was unique, I meant that it went into directions I wasn’t expecting it to. The Kree-Skrull War is what the story is centered around and I am amazed by the twists this film took during it. About halfway through the film kind of takes a turn, at first I didn’t feel so good about it, but I ended up loving it. It works perfectly and it wasn’t to be expected at all. If this is the future of the MCU, I am excited for it becuase there is so much story to tell after this.
The character arc of Carol Danvers is fantastically done. This is the first female lead MCU film and it is rightfully done. She learns to rise up and be her her own unique hero. She refuses to be a soldier of war, she rises up to become a hero to end wars and bring peace to them. Throughout the whole film she is told to control her powers and follow orders, but Carol rises up and becomes her own hero and embraces the powers she has. It’s quite an epic and incredible story and I loved it.
The only real issues here were probably the visual and special effects. Some moments were very notcualbke and the effects didn’t quite look as good as they should have. I don’t think the effects were handled as well as they could have, you can really tell some things were cgi and it was a bit distracting for me at some moments. Also the action and fight sequences weren’t as exciting as they could’ve been. The final act features some fast paced action and it didn’t pay off for me, I thought it was very formulated and didn’t do justice to fit into the overall story. It just kind of came to an end, the story was never really finshed and the ending didn’t satisfy me enough. It didn’t close all arcs, it left a lot open, but I guess that would make sense considering the timeline. I would like to know what happened to Captain Marvel between the end of this film and from the time she will show up in Avengers: Endgame.
Overall, CAPTAIN MARVEL was a pure joy to watch. I’m glad we finally have her in the MCU. Brie Larson is an absolute blast to watch and her performance is incredible. She is the future of the MCU and I am very happy about that. The film didn’t disappoint and it is most definitely one of the most unique comic book films, going into directions I wasn’t expecting them to take. It’s very nice that the film took that risk of twisting the story halfway through, it was effective and well done. I can’t wait to see more of this story and this character in the near future. What an absolute blast.
