Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★★★

Normally I'm turned off by films that change tone so quickly - especially comedy to tragedy... but for some reason Waititi is able to balance the two sides and even bring them together wonderfully. The same prop might have a particular meaning one moment and then 20 minutes later mean something completely different and gives the viewer pause to think about those implications.

Here is a complex, wonderful set of characters that are part satire, part comedic and part tragic. Ironically enough, the weakest part of the film is Waititi himself playing a goofy version of Hitler. It's nearly at the forefront of all the marketing and it works for a time, but the schtick gets old and isn't really all that funny in the first place. Still, the sentiment of that character is important for our hero's journey into adolescence during such a tumultuous setting.

It's not perfect, but it's refreshing, thoughtful and unique. I look forward to seeing if more stars are added to this rating upon subsequent viewings.
