    Looking for something to watch and found an old dvd of this at the back of a cupboard and dug it out. It’s a colourful, excessive and occasionally funny ride through Prince’s paisley soaked consciousness. 

    Partly filmed in Europe with inserts shot at Paisley Park the cinematography is lush save for the insert of the grainy video shoot for You’ve Got the Look. 

    The band are remarkably tight and it arguably showcases the flamboyant excesses of Prince at the height of his musical creativity.

    Hitchcock's 'Shadow of a Doubt' filtered through the macabre of Dario Argento, the theatrics of Sam Mendes and the whimsy of a Lemony Snicket novel.

    However, the film is saved by the darkly radiant Mia Wasikowska and the reptilian Matthew Goode who make this super stylised film more than watchable.

    The melodramatic camera work occasionally verges on parody and the graphic novel visuals become a little tiresome, but I couldnt help but enjoy this film.

    The necessity of turning off ones brain whilst watching this movie cannot be overstated.

    However, the silliness is half saved by a cast of charismatic actors turing in ok performances. Mélanie Laurent is charming, as is Mark Ruffalo, but I would be grateful if somebody could please stop Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine from making any more films.
