• Eternals

the first hour bored me to death and then i thought it at least got a bit better, i.e., good enough that i stopped looking at twitter. beyond that, mcu discourse bores the shit out of me. bye

  • The Vigil

    The Vigil

wonder of wonders miracle of miracles a jewish horror film that's actually decent!

after the unborn and the possession i'd almost given up on such a thing actually existing, but keith thomas has made a horror film using jewish mythology that isn't crap.

it's far from perfect - in particular it relies waaaaaaay too much on a loud, jarring score to generate tension - but it has some genuinely unsettling scenes and makes interesting use of an obscure demon from…

    Don't Look Up

watched 24 minutes of this the other day and shut it down. after learning from the very chill david sirota and others on twitter that if i don’t love his “story by” movie i’m in favor of the world burning i figured holy shit i’d better try again.

i lasted maybe another ten minutes

(honestly do u know how much it takes for me to not at least like a movie that opens with astronomers discovering something headed directly for the earth)

    Red Rocket

    tragic mike.

i liked it and i would definitely recommend it but something kept me from loving it the way a lot of people did and i'm honestly not sure what that something is. maybe it's my puritanical midwest upbringing; no, wait, that can't be it because grew up in neither a midwest nor puritanical home. i guess it's just a mystery...

simon rex is fantastic, which is particularly important because i don't think there's a scene in the movie…

    Spider-Man: No Way Home

fucked up and loved it again

  • The Matrix Resurrections

    The Matrix Resurrections

might get into this more in a spoiler review tomorrow or something but for now i'll just say that goddamn i loved this fucking movie.

i'm deducting half-a-star because the action scenes weren't up to the standards of the original(s) imo, and for some logical flaws (i think, anyway) that i don't REALLY care about but need to acknowledge i guess..

    random thoughts:

i never in my life thought i would enjoy seeing that chatty motherfucker the merovingian again, but…

  • Being the Ricardos

    Being the Ricardos

yeah, that's right, i liked it

here's the way i go into a sorkin film that's based on real people: i know that almost nothing i'm seeing happened even remotely the way it's being portrayed, and i simply do not give a shit.

look, i am a fan of aaron sorkin's writing. i know that many people are not, and i completely understand why, it's just that the things that bother them generally don't bother me. i love his rhythm…

  • The Matrix Revolutions

    The Matrix Revolutions

yes, it's flawed, but it's also MUCH better than i remembered, and also a lot less convoluted. it's been awhile since i watched it but i seem to remember finding the ending a bit confusing/vague, and i absolutely didn't feel that way this time.

what drags the film down a bit imo is the looooooong second act that takes place pretty much exclusively in zion/the real world; it's not that that stuff is bad, it's just frankly not as exciting…

    The Matrix Reloaded

ok i zoned out a bit when the merovingian wouldn't shut the hell up, but other than that, this is a great movie, actually, and the freeway scene remains an all-timer
