    High Life

    ★★★

As a fan of some of Denis' previous and most influential French colonial films (Chocolat and White Material), I was left extremely disappointed by High Life, which felt like a shallow exposé on existentialism, humanity, the value of life and sexuality amongst an isolated group picked from the margins of society (criminals from death row). While the images were striking and beautifully captured, they felt empty as if meant only to evoke reaction; the inclusion of a "fuckbox" seemingly only…

Hale County This Morning, This Evening

    ★★½

While beautifully shot and put together, Hale County This Morning, This Evening lacked a sense of cohesiveness in its montage footage/photo novel experimental style which left me less touched than I thought I would be. Some moments felt they lingered too long and others not long enough to fully characterize each individual for me. Nevertheless, the film itself is beautifully photographic (but as cinema, I'm not sure it had the desired effect) and is admirable in its subject choice.

    ★★★

Going into First Man, a film directed by a man whose two previous works were complete masterpieces in my eyes but who has never dabbled in historical biopics, I knew I had to keep my expectations cautiously low. A Star Is Born

    ★★★½

A Star is Born astounds in a stellar first half that I loved only to fall flat in the second with an ending that while melancholic (and tear-jerking) feels a little off and buried in clichés. Lady Gaga is absolutely the irreplaceable star of this otherwise lacking film as she delivers a raw and deeply human performance that is powered by her stand-out voice. Every musical performance, especially the title song "Shallow" and her La Vie en Rose rendition, left…
