I said in my RRR review that the only competition that movie had for movie of the year was The Northman. As a massive fan of The Lighthouse, I was really looking forward to what Eggers had in store, because I think he's one of the better directors out there.
And yep, it was as awesome as I expected. I love how he took full advantage of the 90 million dollar budget to brings us what should be a simple Viking Revenge movie, and turns it into a more layered and nuanced kind of movie. It's a slower burn than I expected, being 2 hours and 15 minutes. But I feel like the story and characters is well worth the runtime. Visually this movie is stunning, you can really see the craftsmanship used to make this movie as authentic as it is. And the cast is outstanding as well, with the highlight being Skarsgard. Even when he's not speaking, you can tell he's filled to the brim with rage just by looking at him. Daddy Dafoe is always a highlight as well, though I wish he had had more screen time.
Honestly, I'm glad that the movie is as great as it was. Especially considering the low level of quality we've had for movies this year. Although I still wouldn't say it was as good as RRR, but that's ok.
Anyway, thanks for reading. :)
