Angus Milne’s review published on Letterboxd:
3rd watch now and I still can't make up my mind on this one. I admire what Johnson was trying to do, but this is such a mixed bag. It's way too long (by at least 30-40 mins), the pacing is all over the place, Finn and Rose's romance/relationship feels super forced, a lot of characters don't really have character development, and most of the comedy completely fails. But at the same time all of the stuff with Luke and Rey is great, the film is beautifully shot, the special effects are fantastic, and the score is definitely one of the best in the franchise.
Like I said I have super mixed feelings on this one, but I still wouldn't call it a terrible movie by any means. I feel like with a tighter edit and a bit less comedy, this may have actually been pretty great. But as it is, it's just good. Not one of my favourites in the franchise, but far from being the worst.
Edit: Seeing TROS and sitting on it for a bit actually kind of makes me appreciate what this one did a bit more. I still have a lot of gripes with it and kind of hate a few scenes, but the good definitely outweighs the bad.
