Almost every time I watch a Mike Leigh film, I ask myself the same question... why do I ever watch any films that aren't directed by Mike Leigh?

A best score, best actor, best actress, best supporting actress, and best director shortlist for the 1990's.

Beginning one of the meanest films I've ever seen with "Love to Love You Baby" is, in retrospect, an extremely funny joke.

paid tribute to the aesthetics of this film by watching it on my bed with the computer propped up on my comforter making every shot slightly more kanted than it was to start

  • Man on the Moon

    Man on the Moon

    ★★★

biopics are a mostly bereft genre, and man on the moon is no different except that simply having a talented comedian replicate andy kaufman's bits is pretty funny and, therefore, makes the movie watchable.

that said, i think kaufman had a huge influence on a whole wave of comedians that i hate and wonder if we should have gotten such a nice retrospective even if that isn't really his fault. i can't explain exactly what the difference is but kaufman's trolling works. maybe because he was committed enough to turn off his own audience and let his ship sink if it suited the bit.
