Dune ★½

villeneuve predictably turns this into a big & bland example of contemporary sci-fi. he paints no life in a world that deserves a more vibrant, imaginative depiction. it’s as if he aimed to direct the convoluted novel without care for its story, just a desire to produce the most straightforward, palatable blockbuster adaptation possible—existing for his audience to ooh and ahh at the cast (while they all sort of stand around, saying their lines and looking out of place in each frame) & signature visual style without giving his viewers something to actually care about. hearing someone say “this is only the beginning” after sitting through a 2.5 hour runtime felt like a threat.
