Small and charming, episodic and tear-jerking, Spike Lee has made a nice family film.

    Le Notti Bianche

A love triangle with one corner mostly absent (but exerting the strongest force). Delightful studio rendering of a corner of a Venice-ish place under misty lighting. Our hero is beautifully rendered too by Mastroianni - doing battle with his own mild-mannered demons as well as his rival. The cafe - dance sequence is electrifying and demonstrates the wrongness of the choices ultimately made.

As my companion pointed out as we slipped away before the Q&A with director Simon Amstell, you have to be really careful if you are making a film about your avatar making a bad film. I really wanted to like this but it was truly feeble. Despite strong performances across the cast, the plot and the motivations it reveals are self-indulgent and close to pointless. Come back Woody Allen...

Whoah, this is a weird one. Kurt Russell channels an incompetent John Wayne - and all in all it's like some radical Alice in Wonderland where the rabbit hole takes you to a scary place round the back of San Francisco's Chinatown. There's kung-fu, Fu Manchu (sort of) and a friendly tour guide who knows lots of magic. Cool, funny and only drops the pace in one or two spots. The Prince Charles served it all up in 70mm too.
