Favorite. It’s such a loaded word. Can you really pick a favorite anything? Ask me my favorite song, album, book, food, whatever, and it’ll likely be different when you ask me again next week.

But with film, it’s been easy. From as far back as my memories go, it was always Ghostbusters, and then from 2003 to current day, it’s been Lost In Translation. Clearly, Bill Murray (or at least his on-screen personas) has always been braided into the fabric…

    Inspector Ike

    ★★★★½

This will not land with most of you, but holy shit I laughed so much. Inspector Ike is an amazing recreation of 1980’s detective shows and made-for-TV movies with an absurdist panache, down to the F-list acting and goofy stingers. It’s silly, more than anything else, but in a way that feels so good and reminds you of being a kid in a way, when you did goofy stuff just for the fun of it.

    Clean and Sober

    ★★★½

Clean And Sober catches Michael Keaton hot off a critically lauded performance in Beetlejuice and headlong into his first major dramatic role. He’s sensational here, as an addict who checks into a substance abuse clinic as a way to avoid the police and other chaotic elements his activities have brought upon him.

As far as subject matter goes, and as someone who has been in rehab, it seems fairly accurate and true to life. Keaton’s Daryl is a real obnoxious asshole here, but…

Boogie Nights meets The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but not nearly as good as either. I was solidly into this until the wife appears, and then it lost me. It wasn’t bad, per se, I just got really, really bored. It looks really nice, I like what West is doing with the cross cuts now and then, creating this sense of dreadful impact. The color saturation and aspect ratio change is appealing when they dance between the film and real…

    Gone Girl

    ★★★★½

I hadn’t seen Gone Girl since opening weekend in the theater. Two things stand out:

    1) This is one of the best examples of perfectly executed manipulative storytelling in film history. Hell, I’ve seen it before and I still got suckered all the way in, switching sides left and right, just as intended. I’ve never read the book by Gillian Flynn, but she also adapted the screenplay for Fincher so all the kudos goes to her. Absolutely incredible script, and…
