some welcome whimsy and play after the emotionally devastating 400 Blows, genuinely some of the most fun i’ve had watching a movie. my one complaint is this deserved a longer runtime, there was enough to sustain a feature here. jean-pierre’s commitment makes me believe this is a great tragedy, antoine has spent so long pretending to be an adult. i can not wait for Stolen Kisses!!

it’s easy to forget or downplay how hopeless a childhood can be when it feels like the would around you is working against you, or worst doesn’t care. out of the gate, jean-pierre has such an obvious and natural star quality (that interview scene comes to mind. it’s debuts like this that genuinely shock me, truffaut is so confident in every movement here. so glad i watched this again.

did i love this movie or do i love the eighties, new york, jean michel basquiat, and debbie harry? on a metatextual level, the unreality of a redubed voice on a dead artist moving though a new york culture that has since died (while surrounded by the original recordings of the live music sequences and genuine basquiat works) has an interesting, if unintentional,  commentary on the permanence of art and impermanence of circumstance.
