A masterclass in showmanship, and with songs that are every bit as infectious today as they were in 1984, ‘Stop Making Sense’ could very well be the greatest concert film ever made. This was when Talking Heads were at their very best, when they had built an impressive catalogue of alternative albums, and were just breaking through commercially with the landmark ‘Speaking in Tongues,’ which is sampled heavily here. There is so much stagecraft on display, from the way the musicians were added one by one for the first few songs, to the brilliant use of light and shadow, David Byrne’s body control and energy level, and of course, that ridiculously oversized suit. Somehow it manages to look spontaneous and beautifully choreographed at the same time. Byrne is clearly at the heart of it all, but everyone is allowed to shine, and it’s an absolute joy to watch.
