What a strange installment for a successful, young franchise. Saw III is at once a breathless continuation of the series' relentless momentum, building out lore with compulsive obsession, while also unnecessarily the capper to a Saw trilogy.

Who knows why Leigh Whannell and Darren Lynn Bousman felt the need to treat Saw 3 like the end of a story. Was it a pessimistic hedging of bets, like when a tv show's season finale wraps up a bunch of plot threads…

A John Dahl film in feel and subject matter, but with that scuzzy film of Larry Cohen caked overtop. I love any movie where the first 30 minutes you’re wondering what the premise even is, because the plot is bobbing and weaving with mania.

Bogosian is captivating. I didn’t know you could see him this young!

Why is all of this happening. Why is there no king in this film.

Worse than 47 Ronin, with which it shares a lot of DNA

Really looking forward to a rewatch. Wasn’t brimming with joy from this, but sufficiently entranced by it. The way it keeps introducing new characters, all with their own implied backstory is fantastic worldbuilding. I could spend more time in this fictionalized place. The scene with the truck is terrific; it’s a great depiction of how people can process the same moment in completely opposite ways.

Had forgotten the Opening Night tradition of someone yelling a joke that kills, succumbing to ego, and yelling a second joke that bombs. Love to be back at the movies.

For a film about three franchises colliding, this was so talky. More chaos!
