Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★★★½

So skeptical of this film, I was, fearing some kind of Wes Anderson-esque twee Nazi dramedy filled with smarmy quirks. Even the poster plays it safe, proclaiming itself an "anti-hate satire" in case that's not obvious enough. And some of the louder and more negative reviews primed me for the worst. Would this be an unholy mashup of Anne Frank with Monty Python filtered through a fatal dose of Life is Beautiful sentiment? And it is all of that but, miraculously, it works far better than I imagined, a moving coming of age story, a hilarious dark comedy (Death of Stalin comes to mind), and a prescient political film about the psychology of fascism and hate. It's also my favourite film of the year thus far.
