absolutely insane. talks about performing I think since every character here is a performer in some ways and what it means to be an artist but that's not all. an exaggerated look at celebrity culture at first but it grows to become something even weird and inexplicable and that's clearly the intention as well. carax is definitely making fun of cliches with certain gags but i wasn't expecting to get somewhat emotional. it's also a visual feast—thought I'd grow tired of it's stylistic and musical excess but it really does work. sparks and carax have created something truly special here - it's messy and narratively uneven but also imaginative and ambitious and i can totally see why it's so divisive but it worked for me, can't wait to revisit!!
