Steven Armstrong’s review published on Letterboxd:
Sam Mendes once again proves that he remains a visionary director. The one-shot aspect of the film is inspired and manages to keep the emotion and tensions at a high, while displaying some well-photographed, beautiful images. The story may be simple, but the film carries no less weight than if it were a more intricate affair.
There are several major risks, this film takes with character and story which makes the overall experience that much more engaging and enjoyable. It makes for a pulse-pounding experience and you want to see how everything plays out. Though you hope for a happy ending, you also understand very early on that the hallmarks of war are all around. There are no guarantees, except for the fact that you’ll be thrilled and moved.
