Holy Motors

Holy Motors ★★★½

I have no idea how to review this. During the first five minutes my wife walked in and asked me what was going on. "I'll tell you when I know myself" was my response. That was the last thing I said until the movie was over. Holy Motors is a clever concept, a film that doesn't behave like one and doesn't fall into any pre-conceived genre. The characters aren't the same from one scene to the next and a series of "assignments" could be considered acting gigs (the main character being taken by limo from one job to the next). And yet if that is true it doesn't explain the magical concepts at the film's conclusion, nor why some 'performers' can 'die' and others not. I doubt there will ever be an explanation forthcoming, nor would it be welcome, and the best way to look at Holy Motors is 'a bunch of crazy crap that happens in Paris'. I was going four stars until the weird ending, and for anything to be weirder than the rest of the movie is going some, which went from thought-provoking to farcical. This would certainly not be everyone's cup of tea but I've never seen a movie like it and I've seen thousands of the bloody things.

Oh look, I did manage a review!
