Donnie is not your regular cute, stupid, drunk, drugged teenager from a broken family; if anything, he is too smart for his own good. But still, he has some very big issues, not the smallest of which is receiving frequent visits from a giant scary bunny that we never know for sure if it's real. And by playing on that fine line between dream (nightmare?) and reality, this movie successfully keeps us, and Donnie, guessing and doubting what we see; until that final act, which unfortunately feels a little rushed and is probably the weakest part of this otherwise nuanced coming-of-age movie. A very young looking Gyllenhaal gives a good performance as the center piece of Donnie Darko, with some specially memorable alternations between scarey and scared.
