I haven't found a top-Portuguese-films-ranked-by-average-user-rating list here in Letterboxd, so I decided to make one myself. Included are films that were financed with Portuguese money, are spoken in Portuguese, or have a considerable Portuguese cast. So no need to be directed by a Portuguese person, although I'm not sure if it's fair to include Manoel's Destinies or Love Torn in a Dream (I still haven't seen them).
Limited the list to 50 films, not only to reach a round number but also because there aren't many films with a great average here in LB (the bottom films only have a 3.7 average score...). However, I hope you don't limit yourself to pictures that appear here, as there are many great Portuguese…

However, I hope you don't limit yourself to pictures that appear here, as there are many great Portuguese films not included. I particularly recommend: Os Lobos (1923), Gestos e Fragmentos (1983), Os Canibais (1988), Morrer Como Um Homem (2009), A Portuguesa (2018), and Diamantino (2018).
No 1,000-views threshold required, as it would mean removing a lot of well-scored pictures.

* IMDb lists João César Monteiro as an uncredited director of As Armas e o Povo. Officially, the direction of the film is credited to the Colectivo dos Trabalhadores da Actividade Cinematográfica, but I haven't found any other evidence that JCM did indeed collaborate on this film other than the IMDb page.
