Matthias & Maxime

Matthias & Maxime ★★★

Not the complete misfire that was John F. Donovan, but not an entire return to form for Xavier Dolan, either. The energy that seems to be bursting behind the lens doesn’t match the distance from which we’re positioned outside of the characters of the film. Moments of explosive emotion, a classic Dolan feature, come few and far between a more composed narrative that hits too many predictable beats. It leaves you waiting for the more indulgent aesthetic moments, where the film finally breaks free of a constraint that holds it back far too often.

Still, any movie that gets Harris Dickinson to dab is an automatic win in my book.
