Chicago Drifter’s review published on Letterboxd:
70 MM at the Music Box
Not gonna touch into the ideology n all that of the film, in any sense. Too much for a hot take based on afterwards. I’ll save my usually long rants for later watched. I will say it was trying for it’s time and genre. That brown face looks worse the higher the quality of the film.
That said, as a film, as an experience (especially in 70MM), it’s fucking wonderful.
Flamboyant, colorful, catchy and cheeky songs, and a fair modernization of the Romeo and Juliet story.
Henceforth, I’m snapping my way into any situation I encounter.
Postnote: I forgot that the Jets were heterogeneous ethnic whites and Tony wasn’t Italian American Tony but Polish American Anton.
