Last Friday was was an intense computer day. No amount of music was getting me through the emails so I threw in the towel and decided to queue up a documentary recommended by a friend.
Six hours and one Instagram Survey later, I got 4 docs deep. I realized, HBO Related Features aside, the commonality that lies between Oscar Micheaux: The Black Superhero of Filmmaking, Mr. Soul!, and How They Got Over. So much information is passed about Black Americans’ involvement in Civil & Human Rights movements, but education about our contributions to American Music and Television are often cherry-picked, leaving monumental platforms in the dust.
Alas, American Entertainment is also, like that. Maybe, “that’s SHowbizzz, baby!”
I could go on and draft an encyclopedia of films you could watch the last 5 days of February (that you should really watching beyond February - let’s be real). But today I am sharing a list that focuses on little known, Legendary Black Entertainment contributors, platforms and events: From the Oscar Micheaux’s recently recovered feature films to Janet Jackson’s Post-Superbowl rebuild.
