Quick Review

FLEE tells the extraordinary true story of a man, Amin, on the verge of marriage which compels him to reveal his hidden past for the first time.

This is an exquisite documentary that combines an incredible and compelling story with gorgeous animation. The style is as simple as it gets, but that is something that pays favorably to what we cover throughout the film. Amin is a fascinating person with a backstory that feels as real as it it gets. What he has been through, managed to overcome, and accomplished is nothing short of a miracle. To explore the life of a man who has to continued to keep that secret, yet he is willing to tell his story regardless, is an absolute pleasure. Flee is an appropriate name for a film that will break your heart when these characters have to escape their situations. From his sexuality to his unfortunate set of circumstances, he has been riddled with mental and physical torture throughout his life. He manages to learn who he is and why he survived in the process, and it’s a genuinely heartbreaking series of events. It gets a bit heavy, and I wasn’t completely enthralled by the style at all times, but it accomplishes its overall goal and then some.
